ADC may return to break-even ahead of schedule-CFO
Monday August 4, 10:50 am ET

CHICAGO, Aug 4 (Reuters) - ADC Telecommunications Inc.'s (NasdaqNM:ADCT - News) chief financial officer said on Monday that the communications equipment maker may post break-even results one quarter early due to its cost-cutting efforts.

Robert Switz said the Minneapolis-based company may post break-even financial results before one-time items in its fiscal third quarter, rather than the fourth quarter as it had previously forecast.

"Our message here gravitates around being ahead of schedule on a lot of these expense and cost reductions. It appears now that we might have pulled that break-even point to the third quarter from the fourth," he told Reuters in a telephone interview. That is subject, however, to the closing of the books, he added.

Switz also said ADC appears on track to achieve the $190 million in sales in the third quarter, which ended Aug. 1. In May, the company forecast third-quarter sales of about $190 million and a loss before one-time items of a penny a share. Analysts were expecting a third-quarter loss of a penny and sales of $191.4 million, according to Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group Plc. ADC is scheduled to report those results on Aug. 20.

UPDATE - ADC may get back to break-even early, shares rise
Monday August 4, 11:47 am ET
By Ben Klayman

(Recasts first sentence, adds share movement, company and analyst comments, other details)
CHICAGO, Aug 4 (Reuters) - ADC Telecommunications Inc.'s (NasdaqNM:ADCT - News) chief financial officer said on Monday the communications equipment maker may post break-even results one quarter early due to its cost-cutting efforts, sending shares up nearly 8 percent.

Equipment makers over the past two years have been hit hard by the slowdown in spending by telephone companies, but analysts said ADC has been aggressive in cutting costs.

"This company was hit very hard by the severe downturn in carrier spending," said Nutmeg Securities analyst Andy Schopick, who has a "neutral" rating on the stock and does not own any shares. "Over the past two years, they clearly recognized what needed to be done ... to position this company to be profitable and have success going forward."

He added that ADC's best growth opportunities lie with the demand for its high-speed Internet infrastructure equipment.

Last month, Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - News), one of the largest telecom equipment makers, abandoned plans to return to profits before one-time items in its current fiscal year, which ends in September. Blaming the weak market for wireless equipment, Lucent said it expected to return to profits some time in its 2004 fiscal year.

Switz also said ADC appears on track to hit about $190 million in sales in the third quarter, which ended Aug. 1. In May, the company forecast third-quarter sales of about $190 million and a loss before one-time items of a penny a share.

Analysts were expecting a third-quarter loss of a penny and sales of $191.4 million, according to Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group Plc. ADC posted second-quarter sales of $191.9 million.

ADC is scheduled to report those results on Aug. 20.

Switz said ADC remains on track to reduce its break-even status on a quarterly sales level to below $200 million, and said the company expects to boost its gross profit margins from the second quarter's 38.9 percent.

He said the cost efficiencies going forward will be more modest and ADC will now focus on boosting sales in the still-tough market, where telephone companies have reduced spending on upgrading their networks.

The company, which recently raised $350 million in a notes offering, ended the third quarter with about $730 million in cash, Switz said.

ADC's shares were up 17 cents or 7.8 percent at $2.35 on the Nasdaq late on Monday morning.
