Have you ever heard of the Empire State Manufacturing Survey? Don't feel bad if you haven't. Not many people have, even in the financial community. In fact, it's a pretty safe bet that most of the traders and institutions that were caught up in the stock-buying frenzy that hit the markets on Monday have never heard of it either, since it is only a year old. Nevertheless, it was the alleged trigger for the 200-point rise in the Dow and a more than 2-per-cent rise in both the Nasdaq market index and the Standard & Poor's 500 index.
